Peacock Green Bead Jhumkas
A temple jhumka with a peacock at the top. The stud is a white-stone flower resting on a granulated peacock curve with a green teardrop set into its body; below it hangs a tall gold-tone dome, open-worked and banded with white stones above a lattice of ruby-red diamonds. The dome finishes in a double row of drops — cream pearl beads first, then deep green ovals.
What makes this pair work
- The peacock is the signature. It is the oldest motif in South Indian temple jewellery, and here it sits at the top where it actually gets seen, rather than being buried in the body of the jhumka.
- An open dome, not a solid one. The cut-out work keeps the jhumka light and lets light pass through it — a solid dome of this height would be heavy on the ear all evening.
- Two drop colours. Pearls and green ovals in separate rows give the fringe depth instead of a single flat line.
- Green carried top to bottom. The teardrop in the peacock echoes the beads at the base, which is what makes the pair read as designed rather than assembled.
How to style it
- Pair with green. These are at their best against a green Kanjivaram or pattu saree, or a green half-saree — the bead drops pick the colour straight out of the fabric.
- Or let them contrast. Against cream, gold, mustard or off-white silk, the green beads become the only colour in the outfit, which is a cleaner and more modern look.
- Add a green-bead mala. A gutta poosalu or green-bead chain repeats the drop colour at the neck and ties the whole set together without matching exactly.
- Hair up. A jhumka this tall needs a bun, a plait or hair pushed behind the shoulder. Loose hair hides the dome entirely.
- With a plain silk blouse and no necklace, they are enough on their own for a pooja, a Golu visit or a Diwali evening.

Caring for it
- Put jewellery on last — after makeup, perfume and hairspray have fully dried — and take it off before bathing, exercise, swimming or sleeping.
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear, and use a soft dry brush through the open-work of the dome where dust settles.
- Keep away from perfume, deodorant, creams, water, hot water, detergent, household chemicals and prolonged sweat. Do not wash or soak.
- Store flat in an airtight box so the bead fringe does not tangle with other pieces.
- Lift the pair by the stud, not by the dome or the drops.
Frequently asked questions
What is a jhumka?
A jhumka is a bell- or dome-shaped drop earring, one of the oldest earring forms in India and known as jimiki in Tamil. The dome usually ends in a fringe of pearls, beads or small bells, and the shape appears across temple, kundan and everyday jewellery.
What does the peacock symbolise in South Indian jewellery?
The peacock is associated with Lord Murugan and with grace, beauty and monsoon abundance. It is among the most common motifs in temple jewellery, appearing on jhumkas, harams, vaddanams and nose rings alike.
Are jhumkas suitable for Diwali, Dussehra and Navratri?
Yes — jhumkas are the default festive earring across South India. A green-and-gold pair like this works for Golu, Dandiya nights, Lakshmi pooja and Diwali visits, and carries a silk saree without needing a heavy necklace.
Will these be too heavy for a full day?
The dome is open-worked rather than solid and the drops are beads, so the pair is considerably lighter than it looks. For an all-day function, having your hair up also takes strain off the ear.
Are the green stones real emeralds?
No. They are decorative green stones and green beads. They are not emeralds and are not sold as such — the same applies to the red and white stones.
Are the pearls real?
No. They are pearl beads, not cultured or natural pearls.
Is this jewellery anti-tarnish?
No. This is a standard gold-tone finish, not an anti-tarnish or specially coated piece. Wiping it dry after each wear and keeping it away from perfume and sweat is what extends the finish.
