Rice Pearl Ruby Chandbalis
Pearls packed in, not hung below. A flower stud of ruby-red petals around a green square opens onto a crescent that is filled almost entirely with clusters of small rice pearls — oval, slightly irregular, massed between ruby-red pear-cuts and white stones. More pearl clusters spill from the lower edge, and three mint green ovals fall at the bottom. The density of the pearls is the whole design.
What makes this pair work
- Rice pearls, not round ones. The elongated shape packs more tightly and catches light along its length, which is why the surface looks textured rather than beaded.
- Pearls in the body, not just the fringe. Most chandbalis keep pearls for the drop. Filling the crescent with them changes the whole character — softer, older, closer to heirloom jewellery.
- Ruby pear-cuts for structure. Without the red, a mass of pearls would read as formless. The stones give the crescent its lines back.
- A quiet green finish. Three mint ovals at the bottom, nothing more — enough to stop the palette from being purely red, white and gold.
How to style it
- These read as heirloom. If you want jewellery that looks inherited rather than bought, this is the pair in the range that does it.
- Pair with a pearl haram or gutta poosalu — the pearl texture repeats down the neck and the set looks collected over time rather than bought together.
- Deep silk is the right backdrop. Maroon, bottle green, brick, aubergine and navy all make the pearls glow. Against ivory or cream they can wash out.
- Hair up, neck short or bare. A wide pearl-packed crescent needs clear space.
- Keep makeup soft. A heavy lip competes with a pearl earring; defined eyes and a muted mouth let the texture do the work.

Please note
This is premium imitation (fashion) jewellery. The pearls are pearl beads, not cultured or natural pearls. The red, green and white stones are decorative stones — they are not rubies, emeralds or diamonds, and are not sold as such. This is a standard finish, not an anti-tarnish or specially coated piece.
Caring for it
- Put jewellery on last — after makeup, perfume and hairspray have fully dried — and take it off before bathing, exercise, swimming or sleeping.
- Pearl beads dull faster than stones when perfume, hairspray or sweat settles on them. Spray scent before you dress, never after, and wipe the pair with a soft dry cloth at the end of every wear.
- Keep away from perfume, deodorant, creams, water, hot water, detergent, household chemicals and prolonged sweat. Do not wash or soak.
- Store flat in an airtight box. Densely strung pearls snag easily on zari and on other jewellery.
- Lift by the stud, not by the pearl clusters — the stringing is the part that takes strain.
Frequently asked questions
What are rice pearls?
Rice pearls are small, elongated, slightly irregular pearls — named for their grain-like shape. In Indian jewellery they are used in dense clusters rather than single drops, because the shape packs tightly and gives a soft, textured surface.
What colour saree suits pearl earrings best?
Deep colours. Maroon, bottle green, navy, brick and aubergine give pearls something to glow against. Against ivory, cream or white, pearls tend to disappear into the fabric.
Can pearl jewellery be worn for Diwali and weddings?
Yes. Pearls are traditional South Indian festive jewellery, especially in gutta poosalu and pearl haram form, and a pearl-set chandbali is an established wedding and reception choice.
How do I keep the pearls from dulling?
Keep them away from perfume, hairspray and sweat, which are what dull pearl beads fastest. Put the earrings on after getting ready, not before, and wipe them with a soft dry cloth at the end of each wear.
Are the pearls real?
No. They are pearl beads, not cultured or natural pearls.
Are the red and green stones real rubies and emeralds?
No. They are decorative stones in the kemp tradition and are not sold as rubies or emeralds. The white stones are not diamonds.
Is this jewellery anti-tarnish?
No. This is a standard gold-tone finish, not an anti-tarnish or specially coated piece. Wiping it dry after each wear and keeping it away from perfume and sweat is what extends the finish.
