Ruby Peacock Filigree Jhumkas
Twin peacocks face each other inside a fan of gold-tone filigree, bordered all the way round with ruby-red stones and crowned by a single white pear-cut stone. A pearl sits at the centre where the two birds meet, pearl fringes fall from both outer edges, and a ruby-set dome jhumka hangs below with its own pearl border. This is temple jewellery at full volume — the pair for the wedding, not the weekday.
What makes this pair work
- Filigree, not flat metal. The fan behind the peacocks is pierced open-work, so the design has depth and the earring stays lighter than its size suggests.
- Ruby-red carried right through. The stone border on the fan and the fully set dome give the pair a single, confident colour rather than a scatter of accents.
- Two pearl fringes, two heights. One at the sides of the fan, one around the base of the dome — the double line is what gives the earring its movement.
- Classic temple proportion. A wide top over a smaller dome is the traditional jhumka silhouette, and it frames the face rather than dragging it down.
How to style it
- This is a bridal and wedding-guest pair. Kanjivaram, pattu or Banarasi silk, a bridal lehenga, or a half-saree for a reception.
- Red, maroon and gold are the natural matches — the ruby-red sits directly in that palette. Cream and off-white silk also work beautifully, with the red becoming the only colour you wear.
- Go short at the neck or go long — not mid. A close kante or attigai leaves the ears clear; a long kasu haram or mango mala sits well below them. A mid-length necklace will crowd the fringe.
- Hair must be up. A bun with gajra or a tight plait. These are too detailed to lose behind loose hair.
- Skip the maang tikka unless you are the bride. With a pair this wide, a tikka plus a heavy necklace is one element too many.

Caring for it
- Put jewellery on last — after makeup, perfume and hairspray have fully dried — and take it off before bathing, exercise, swimming or sleeping.
- Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth after each wear, and use a soft dry brush through the filigree, where dust settles fastest.
- Keep away from perfume, deodorant, creams, water, hot water, detergent, household chemicals and prolonged sweat. Do not wash or soak.
- Store flat in an airtight box so the pearl fringes do not catch on other pieces.
- Lift the pair by the stud. Filigree is the part most easily bent out of shape.
Frequently asked questions
What is filigree work in Indian jewellery?
Filigree is fine open-work where the metal is pierced or twisted into a lace-like pattern rather than left solid. It makes a large design lighter to wear and lets light pass through it, which is why it recurs on temple earrings and harams that would otherwise be too heavy.
Are these too big for a non-bride to wear?
Not at all — they work well for a wedding guest, a reception or a Diwali evening. The rule is simply to let them be the statement: a close-fitting necklace or none, and hair up.
What does the peacock motif mean?
The peacock is associated with Lord Murugan and with grace and abundance. Twin peacocks facing each other, as here, is a traditional temple arrangement signifying harmony and balance.
Are these suitable for Diwali, Dussehra and Navratri?
Yes. Ruby-red stone work with pearl fringes is the classic South Indian festive palette, and this pair carries a silk saree for Lakshmi pooja, Golu or a Dussehra function without needing anything else.
Are the red stones real rubies?
No. They are decorative ruby-red stones in the kemp tradition. They are not rubies and are not sold as such — the same applies to the white stones.
Are the pearls real?
No. They are pearl beads, not cultured or natural pearls.
Is this jewellery anti-tarnish?
No. This is a standard gold-tone finish, not an anti-tarnish or specially coated piece. Wiping it dry after each wear and keeping it away from perfume and sweat is what extends the finish.
